The CB Class Licence is the qualification that permits a person to operate a Bridge & Gantry Crane with various handling attachment. Delivered at your the workplace, this program is for both new entrants and experienced operators.

What are bridge and gantry cranes?

A bridge crane:

  • consists of a bridge beam or beams that are mounted to end carriages at each end
  • is capable of travelling along elevated runways, and
  • has one or more hoisting mechanisms arranged to traverse across the bridge.

A gantry crane:

  • consists of a bridge beam or beams supported at one or both ends by legs mounted to end carriages
  • is capable of travelling on supporting surfaces
    or deck levels, whether fixed or not, and
  • has a crab with one or more hoisting units arranged to travel across the bridge.

When do you need a HRW licence to operate a bridge or gantry crane?

A Bridge and Gantry Crane HRW Licence is required to operate a bridge or gantry crane that is:

  • controlled from a permanent cabin or control station on the crane, or
  • remotely controlled with more than three powered operations, for example:
    • a single hoist with four powered operations e.g. traversing, travelling, hoisting and rotating, and
    • multiple hoists with four or more powered operations e.g. two non-synchronised hoists would typically have at least five powered operations—traversing by two, hoisting by two and travelling.

Bridge and Gantry Training Course Description

There are two options to choose from when seeking to acquire the Bridge & Gantry Class licence with BeSkilled Training & Assessment:

  1. Workplace based logbook training
  2. Workplace based start-to-finish face to face course

The Bridge & Gantry Licence Course at Beskilled Training is tailor-made to qualify workers for the operation of a container Reach Stacker at their chosen pace. The two options available allow for the streamlining of this important process.This course will prepare workers for the following:

  • Workplace Health & Safety Legislation & Operating Procedures
  • Hazard Identification, Assess Risks & Control Measures
  • Plan Work
  • Overhead Hazards
  • Pre-start Operational Checks
  • Damage & Defect Reporting
  • Communication Methods
  • Load Data Plate Specifications
  • Determining Load Weight & SWL
  • Test lifts of loads
  • Unplanned and or Unsafe Situations
  • Post Operational Checks
  • Shutdown & Secure Crane

Upon completion of this course, workers will be certified to operate a Bridge & Gantry through a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment.

The candidates that have been deemed competent will also receive a SafeWork NSW issued High Risk Work Licence with the CB code.
Prerequisites
Whilst there are no formal prerequisites, an entrant must be over 18 years of age and will ideally have some heavy machinery operating experience. A novice operator or someone new to plant and heavy machinery may require additional training. It is also necessary for the applicant to have a working command of the English language and basic numeracy skills. The course may also require applicants to conduct some manual labour to successfully complete the course. We will help all students make an informed decision regarding suitability prior to enrolment.

Prior to enrolling in this course you will need to obtain a Unique Student Identifier (USI) please visit www.usi.gov.au and ensure you have at least one form of identification
  • You Must be a minimum of 18 years of age
  • You will be required to conduct mathematical calculations throughout this course
  • All students must pass a language, literacy & numeracy assessment (LLN)
  • You must supply 100 points of identification, including (1) form of current photo identification and proof of NSW address. (see below)
  • Wear comfortable and practical clothing and enclosed footwear
  • A passport photo is required when you lodge your HRW Licence application with Australia Post
  • Please arrive 10 minutes prior to the commencement of training
